Press Release from the Office of Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, Aug. 10, 2010:

(Nashville) – Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) has appointed 22nd Judicial District Attorney General Mike Bottoms to the Post-Conviction Defenders Commission. The Commission oversees the Office of the Post-Conviction Defender, which provides for the representation of any person convicted and sentenced to death who cannot afford an attorney.

“I am a strong supporter of the death penalty but we must ensure it’s carried out properly so activist federal judges don’t thwart Tennessee law,” said Lt. Governor Ramsey. “Mike Bottoms is a fair-minded, experienced district attorney general who will make sure those convicted of capital crimes receive the legal representation required by law.”

Senator Bill Ketron (R-Murfreesboro) applauded the appointment of Attorney General Bottoms:

“Mike Bottoms is an excellent choice for the Post-Conviction Defenders Commission,” said Sen. Ketron. “He has earned a reputation for the prompt and efficient administration of justice and the people of Maury, Lawrence, Giles and Wayne Counties are well-served by his efforts on their behalf.”

The mission of the Post-Conviction Defender Commission is to guarantee quality legal representation of all indigent individuals facing execution by the State of Tennessee to ensure that the death penalty is not imposed in an arbitrary manner and that individuals charged with or convicted of capital crimes are afforded the constitutional protections to which they are entitled.
