Bi-partisan vote requests AG look at constitutionality of bill
(Nashville) – On a bi-partisan 6-2 vote, Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) today passed a resolution through the Senate Judiciary Committee urging that Attorney General Bob Cooper join other states in fighting the implementation of unconstitutional federal health care legislation.
“Eighteen states – over 1/3 of the United States, are pushing back on this unconstitutional federal healthcare mandate,” said Lt. Governor Ramsey. “Not only is it unconstitutional, it will destroy state budgets across the nation. It is time for Tennessee to join other states in saying ‘no’ to this budget-busting disaster. We can’t print money like they do in Washington, D.C. We have to live within our means.”
Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper has not released an opinion on the federal legislation. On Tuesday of this week, Cooper opined that state efforts to oppose federal healthcare legislation would be superseded by federal law. He has yet to investigate whether or not the federal bill is constitutional, hence the need for Lt. Governor Ramsey’s resolution.
The resolution will be debated on the Senate floor Monday, April 12. It will then go to the state House of Representatives to be heard.
