While Gov. Phil Bredesen said he didn’t feel this year’s budget was full of “doom and gloom,” he warned that this year’s spending plan includes some tough decisions, including layoffs.
Bredesen, serving his last year in office, will present his final budget to the General Assembly tonight at 6 p.m. in the House of Representatives.
He said his budget uses money in the state’s rainy day fund to soften the blow on cuts and reductions proposed in his the FY2010-2011 budget.
“There were some really difficult cuts in there,” he added.
After the governor releases his budget plan, legislators will have the next few months to sift through the nearly 800-page document and ultimately approve a final version.
The budget year begins July 1.
Bredesen said Tennessee is faring better than other states, but “isn’t out of the woods” yet.
“No, I don’t feel it’s doom and gloom. I feel that there’s good times and bad times. Part of the test of anybody, of the General Assembly or your state government, is it’s not how you do in the good times, it’s how you do in the tough ones.”
