The Legislature is moving to reinstitute a ban on local health boards forcing restaurants to post caloric information about the food they serve. Proponents of the the veto-overriding say it is necessary to prevent a patchwork of regulations across Tennessee; opponents say the General Assembly is in effect overriding local control.

Out-of-work assistance fund’s solvency is now in doubt. Benefit payments to unemployed Tennesseans have exceeded the amount of taxes paid into the unemployment fund. The state’s unemployment rate in December was 10.7 percent, up from 10.0 percent in November, and up 3.3 percent from December of last year.
